<br />
We're continuing with our restoration of hull #331 which we purchased last June. Just took inventory of our sails and realized that we don't have a main sail.<br />
<br />
Our plan has been to sail the boat with her current sails and rig this summer so we can get a feel for how she sails, and then tackle the rig and sails comprehensively next winter, including new sails, standing rigging, and potentially some changes to spars, etc all done together at that time.<br />
<br />
Therefore, we're looking to find a used main to get us by for this summer. She's a 1973 Yawl, so has the short boom. Anyone have one in decent condition that they'd be interested in selling?<br />

I am repowering Primrose (#113) to a Yanmar and want to sell the working Atomic 4 coming out.  Any thoughts where to do that?  Craigslist seems too general purpose. I would think the engine would be interest to only sailers with boats of a certain age.   Any guidance would be really appreciated.<br />

Thanks for your input on the chain plate grapefruits. The boat is in Buffalo,NY, I live in FL and am about to go up there for spring commisioning. As for the deck in the vicinity of the chain plates, the boat passed survey fine, no water there. However I plan on doing as you did, drill a hole and see what comes out - surgery may follow. That's the fun part. I've seen water drip from the grapefruit so... I am a wood boat guy and it freaks me out thinking about fiberglassing in new knees, etc. I think like a wood boat guy, read outboard chain plates, that would be a first on a Tartan 34. <br />
I'll keep you posted.<br />

Did the exhaust exit the engine going straight back? On the Yanmar site they show an elbow that goes up and does a 180 coming off the engine. <br />

The old stringers were a mess to begin with as you could tell from the pictures - fit like a glove to the old engine, but totally unworkable for a repower (not level, straight, or flat). They were completely removed and ground down; the wood itself was in rough shape. (Picture attached.) Seeing them in pieces on the ground, it's implausible to imagine ever going to all this effort and expense of the new yanmar and using them.<br />
<br />
The new stringers were fabricated by Dutch Wharf Boat Yard. I'm not familiar with the intimate details of how they made them, but I do know they were custom built. They made a mock up of the engine using a piece of plywood cut to size, a mock shaft, and the actual motor mounts (fixed to the plywood). From there, it was a careful process of fitting, trimming, fitting, trimming, etc. until they got the right positioning and angle in relationship to the prop shaft. They also took into account clearances around the bulkhead and the engine cover.<br />
<br />
From there, they glassed over them and painted with bilgekote (white would've been our preference for better reflection and visibility, but we went with grey to match the rest of our bilge which was recently painted by the previous owner). Aluminum plates were installed on top of the stringers, bolted down, and then the engine was bolted in.<br />
<br />
The engine is now installed (she is beautiful!!), as is a new muffler and exhaust system, and so far, all is going well with the project. I've uploaded a few additional pictures, and will plan to do a full posting and link to a gallery with additional pictures soon.  <br />

            <description><![CDATA[FYI...for those interested in the Nature's Head...we installed one this month on Quaesita (#428). The install was easy and so far we've been very pleased with it. We've had the boat out twice so far this year to shake everything down, including the head and the kids love it and we do too. <br />
<br />
We've gone on to remove the 30 year old waste plumbing and holding tank...a job which was unpleasant in cold weather. I don't want to imagine that job in hot weather. It is interesting to note that with all the old waste system removed, the whole smell of the boat has improved. It now only smells of atomic 4 and whatever food crumbs the kids leave behind.<br />

            <description><![CDATA[On Full Circle, my 1970 Hull #116, I am starting to see evidence of crazing. The dark blue of the topsides was awlgripped in 1998 shortly after I purchased the boat. The blue has held up well. I buff it with 3M finesse and wax with a good carnuba wax each spring. Note that as I move along in years I think that the boat is growing. The yard that did the Awlgrip yard 13 years ago is a very competent yard. Although he, the yard owner,<br />
has not recently viewed the current condition of the hull, he has indicated that it is highly likely that it is crazing in the original gelcoat and either grinding off the gelcoat or peeling is most likely in order. Has anyone else had this experience. In particular has anyone seen this in your hull, awlgripped without a full grind down or peel only to have the crazing reappear within a couple of years (his warning if it is not peeled)<br />
The yard has been &quot;peeling&quot; older hulls for several years. For those that have not seen the process, it is performed with a hand held peeler that has a fine adjustment for thickness of the peel in thousand's of an inch. Done properly, the fairing after peeling is not significantly more extensive than normal fairing as a prep before Awlgrip.<br />

Sounds usable I just replaced mine with 30' of 1/8 7 x 7 halyard wire and it was a 3 hand job holding the wraps around the winch in place til tight.   [6 counter clockwise for the down cable and 2 clockwise for the up cable... with the board up all the way]<br />
The only thing I would consider is how resilient will it be to oil and bilge goop?<br />

I have recently replaced my primary Barients 22's with Harken 44's and found the winch boxes to be  solid  FRP . I filled the original holes with 5 minute 2-part epoxy, then remarked and drilled 5-new holes with over size flat washes on the bottom. Aleta is hull # 120 1970 model and also has the 3/8 teak  covering board on the top which makes for a solid mount. I have photos at the following link.             <description><![CDATA[Hi All - The winter of 2009-2010 Sandy and I put a winter cover on Indra - It did a great job of protecting her but also created a bad mildew problem in the cabin. This year we used a product called Damp Away - we got it from Jamestown Distributors - We put a few in the cabin, one in the head and one in the V berth and didn't have any problem with mildew. I am sure many of you already know about Damp Away but for those who don't it works great!<br />

Thanks for responding. It sounds like you have definately been down the road on 34C centerboards. My boat is a 1970, Hull # 116 and my bushing setup does sound different. Would it be possible to talk to you? Since you also have a new board I would be very interested in what the square on the pin fit (in thousands) is to the square in the new board. I guessed at about a .005 in. fit of pin to board. Tartan had no information on the fit. Right now I have rebuilt the board (welded in a new 316ss insert) and have been trying to get a better fit of end of pin to bushing on the port side. I splash in less thatn a month. The bronze bushing was missing on my boat.  The replacement has a flange OD of 2.125&quot; and a flange thickness of .125&quot;.  The bushing is surface mounted, bedded in epoxy with thickener. Holes were drilled in the flange to give the epoxy a better grip.  The thickness of the flange depends on the thickness of  your board and the resulting space available in the trunk. I have a new board from Tartan and it is thinner than a repaired board undergoing the same bushing replacement in my yard. Both boats are 1973 yawls.  We also found that the depth and width of the bushing recess in the trunk varied from boat to boat.<br />

            <description><![CDATA[I contacted Art and he did not have access to the bushing information that I was looking for. I agree that Art is very helpful. I have spoken to him in the past.<br />
I did talk to Neal Musto who did the job about 10 years ago. He had a bushing made but did not keep any dimensions. He wrote up his experiences on rebuilding his centerboard which is on the website and has very good information with pictures that documented his project. Neal got a case of 3 footitis a few years ago and I don't think that he participates on the forum anymore, His write up was very helpful on my board rebuild last fall. <br />

Here's the solution for a bow roller on hull 428. The previous owner had this &quot;pulpit&quot; installed at the dealer back in 1976. It works great! I have no details on part numbers etc. as it is all custom.  Hopefully the picture helps.<br />

            <description><![CDATA[Who has done the R &amp; R of the bronze bushing that the port side of the cernterboard pivot pin rides in? I am in process since there was a lot of slop in the fit. I have redone the Square hole in the centerboard (machined out the original bronze insert in the board and welded in a 316 ss insert with the square hole)and the pin is in great shape. I have reamed the bronze bushing out some (currently at 27/32) The bushing is still in the keel. I could leave the original reamed out bushing in place and sleeve the bushing from the current i.d. but ideally I would like to make a new bushing since that results in a fairly thin walled sleeve. Anyone know the original o. d. of the bushing?<br />
Was it Deane Holt that went thru this process? I home store my Tartan, do all of my own work on the boat and have good machine shop capability at home.]]></description>

We're just underway with a repower as well, converting our hull #331 from a Volvo Penta 2002 series over to a Yanmar 30YM30. We too talked with Joe from Sound Marine, who had great familiarity with the T34c's, as well as great responsiveness and customer service. We were convinced that a Beta would be a great choice, but in the end, went with the Yanmar for a number of reasons including its long history of success in a marine environment. Our engine beds were in tough shape, and we ended up replacing them entirely. Albeit a lot of effort, it's satisfying to know that we're now building up from a solid foundation. I attached before and after pictures below.<br />

We plan to post a more thorough account of the re-power project within the Projects and Photos forum shortly, along with our thinking behind engine HP, prop size, etc. (much of it informed by George Colligan's thorough study).<br />

George - delighted to hear that plans are underway for a new site! Hopefully it will be reinvigorating for this community, and we look forward to making frequent use of it! Hopefully you will be able to transfer over all existing content?<br />

As we prepare to set up for the new T34-C website, it will be my responsibility to help manage the Forum columns on it. One of the really important topics I hope we can cover is the issue of Re-powering the T34-C.  I will be most interested in having you post about your experience in replacing the A-4 with the Universal Diesel, especially as it involved changing out / glassing in a new propulsion tube, set at a lower angle, etc.  <br />

Our hope is that the new website can be up and running by next month.<br />

As you may know, at the present time they are on the NC Outer Banks.  Surely their story is one of the most remarkable adventure stories I know involving the Tartan 34-C.  <br />

Were the earlier boom/outhaul setups different? I happen to like the ability to crank the outhaul snug, my main is loose footed.]]></description>
